Viareggio, known as the city of Carnival ( www.viareggio.ilcarnevale.com ) is the most important tourist destination in Versilia. Embraced by the sea and the Apuan Alps, with its beautiful pine woods and a network of enchanting, narrow streets to stroll along. Founded in 1172 as a coastal gateway for the then Republic of Lucca, it has developed, since the early 1800s, a strong tourist vocation inaugurating, in 1828, the first bathing establishment. Today it is one of the most important holiday destinations in Italy, able to attract winter tourism thanks to the Carnival and in the summer thanks to the bathing establishments.
